Reliable live tracking for time-critical shipments.

An automotive components manufacturer supplies an OEM assembly plant over a long intercity lane. Symplichain gave the team a dependable position for every shipment, with no dependence on the driver and no new hardware.

The challenge

Visibility depended on the driver’s phone.

The company moves parts on market trucks with contract drivers. Drivers change between trips, the vehicles belong to the transporter, and phone habits differ from one driver to the next.

  1. 01

    No dependable position

Once a truck left the factory gate, position came from phone calls. Tracking apps were installed inconsistently and were often switched off.

  2. 02

    Commitments nobody could stand behind

ETAs shared with the OEM rested on the last call to the transporter. Night movements and long legs were the hardest to follow.

  3. 03

    No single record

Nothing tied a shipment, a driver and a vehicle together. When a driver changed phones or vehicles on the route, the location on record was wrong.

The approach

One position, built from signals that do not fail together.

Symplichain tracks the shipment and does not rely on the driver’s phone. Independent signals feed a single position, and the platform falls back automatically when one of them goes quiet.

  • Toll reads confirm movement along the corridor with no action from the driver.
  • Live GPS from the driver app is used when it is present and trusted.
  • Route intelligence estimates position and ETA between confirmed points.
  • Driver and vehicle identity are checked against the vehicle registry at assignment.

How it works

Four steps, then tracking runs on its own.

The setup is the same for every shipment. After dispatch, nobody has to act for tracking to continue.

  1. 01

    Shipment creation

Each shipment is created with its origin, destination and consignment detail, so every later signal has a record to attach to.

  2. 02

    Driver identity mapping

The driver is mapped by mobile number and driving licence, which creates an auditable identity link for the trip.

  3. 03

    Vehicle assignment

The vehicle is assigned by registration number and checked for registration and compliance status against the vehicle registry.

  4. 04

    Automatic tracking

Tracking starts at dispatch and continues for the whole journey. The driver does nothing, so there is nothing to forget.

The outcome

Tracking that continues when a driver goes dark.

After deployment the lane was fully visible, and it stayed visible in the cases that used to break tracking.

  • Position stayed available when the driver’s phone was switched off.
  • Position stayed available when no tracking app was installed.
  • Position stayed available when the phone and the vehicle were apart.
  • ETAs shared with the OEM became commitments the team could stand behind.
  • The same setup extended to further routes with no new hardware and no process change.
